I am skeptical that the main stream media's behavior is going to make much of a difference in this campaign. Our country is radically divided ideologically and politically, and McCain's selection of Palin has revved up the conservative/Republican base in a way that nothing else could have this year. Those of us who can't understand how such a nobody from Alaska could do this may be frustrated by it all, but it is a fact that we'll have to live with. She is saavy, cute, and likeable, plus she's a hunter, a soccer mom, and importantly for the base, pro-life. In our Reality TV, celebrity, and, ironically enough, religiously fundamentalist society, these are tremendous assets that can overcome any serious discussion of foreign policy issues.
This could be a repeat of the 2000 election, with all its hanging chads and possible electoral hanky-panky going on. What is new this year is that Obama has a youth and black vote that should be far larger than what Gore had. The future of the world may hinge on that fact.
